May. 17th, 2004 03:29 pmOn have I Got News For you some time ago Nigella Lawson (I think) was asked about reports that she'd had lesbian sex with Anne Widdicombe. She archly replied that it would have been difficult for them to have any other sort of sex, highlighting the media's tendency to try to make a story sound more exciting or salacious by adding the word 'lesbian' (or 'bisexual') in a context where it's a tautology. I thought fondly of that answer when reading the front page of the BBC news site, which currently proclaims:
"Two lesbians are among the first same-sex couples to get married in the US state of Massachusetts."
I'd have thought it would have been a bigger news story if that weren't the case, personally.
No disrespect intended to the story itself, which is welcome and exciting news.
