I have a general mantra of 'I am a planet around which three moons are orbiting in eccentric orbits. Their motions may be chaotic and unpredictable, but if I move in a particular direction, they will generally follow'.

Agreed also with purplerabbits & jenna_mskatonic about that being a not-envying thing.

(I was thinking about schedules, this morning. The trouble is, I am not 100% keen in the abstract on the fullness of schedule that I have, but equally I choose to have it like that because there are many many interesting things that I want to fit into it. Unlike dogrando, who chooses to do fewer of the things he might conceivably like to do in exchange for a quieter life (we were discussing this last night). I am guessing you come down on my side of that balance ;-) )

There's something that's supposed to be a Swedish saying about being a parent that I had to stick into just about every speech I did for someone: "Certain sorrow, uncertain joy".

Having them about does indeed change your life, hugely. But, if you're lucky, there are even bigger compensations. David also had several advantages including being able to see, roughly, what he was getting into, rather than hoping to win the baby lottery

David, if you want to answer this, how often have you gone 'I could walk away from this...' even if you'd never actually do so? It's what helped me in my time as a non-parental adult.
